Texas boy raises money to give $ 400 in gift cards to garbage collectors

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A 6-year-old boy turns his fascination with littering, recycling and compost picking up into a way to spread holiday cheer.

For weeks, kindergarten child Jojo Feehan has been collecting garbage from his neighbors in the street to raise funds to give a Christmas present to garbage collectors. On Wednesday morning, he handed them $ 400 in Amazon gift cards.

“He created the work, we uploaded it to the Facebook group, and he tagged the trash cans, and the neighborhood was super responsive,” Father Joe Feehan said.

Jojo said he even sometimes helps the garbage collectors on pickup day by pushing the trash to them.

“They work so hard for us,” Jojo said.

Her father, Joe Feehan, said they have been following garbage collectors in their neighborhood for four years now. They wake up at 5 or 5:30 a.m. on garbage day and wait until 7 a.m. when the truck arrives.

“It’s something that he has a passion for, and he enjoys doing it, and he gets the chance to go out and spend time with the trash, and I think they are very grateful for that as well,” said Joe.

Joe said that by watching the garbage collectors, he knows his son is learning hard work and appreciation.

Jojo wants to be a garbage collector when he grows up, and he plans to start a subscription service with his neighbors, where they pay him $ 1 a week to return their trash cans from the street.
