The man poses as IAS Tina Dabi and searches for cash, Amazon gift cards; stopped

A Dungarpur man has been arrested for attempting to deceive others on WhatsApp using images of Jaisalmer district collector Tina Dabi. Sunita Choudhary, secretary of the Urban Improvement Trust (Rajasthan Administrative Service), learned of the situation when she received a message requesting an Amazon gift card in Tina Dabi’s name.

The youngsters first created a WhatsApp phone number and uploaded Tina Dabi’s photo as a DP. He then sent messages posing as Dabi and asked for Amazon gift cards of different denominations. Since his texts were written in perfect English, his method seemed real.

ITU (RAS) Secretary Sunita Choudhary said that on Monday evening she received a message in flawless English from the fraudster’s phone number, which made her think Tina Dabi had contacted her. “I thought she had work. However, the scammer asked me for Amazon gift cards in the messages. But I don’t use Amazon,” Choudhary said.

But I contacted Tina Dabi anyway to make sure, and she was horrified to learn of the situation. Jaisalmer collector Tina Dabi alerted the SP as soon as she learned of the fraud effort under her name. With the help of a cyber squad, Jaisalmer SP tracked down the number and discovered Dungarpur district as the location. Subsequently, the man using the phone was arrested.

Tina Dabi also urged residents to be vigilant of text messages from worrying numbers. She said there was only one official number.
